A CD of Jazz Standards from Dreamwalker Media
Vocalist Daniel (D.A.) Young from Indianapolis, Indiana has produced a CD of jazz standards titled, "A Place to Dream."
The CD contains ten of his favorite songs, a mix of classic swing tunes and romantic ballads. The CD also showcases pianist/arranger Ken Fary, with whom Daniel collaborated over several months to plan and rehearse for the record. D.A. and Ken recruited several of Indy's best jazz musicians for a "live-in-studio" performance and follow-up sessions. Personnel included Jack Helsley on bass, Sam Withrow on drums, Michael Stricklin on tenor sax, and Jeff Conrad on trumpet and flugel horn. The album was recorded at The Lodge Studios in Indianapolis, with owner/engineer Michael Graham. The release date was Jan. 15, 2007. Several cuts from the CD and an interview with D.A. were aired on Chuck Workman's Saturday evening jazz show on WICR (Nov. 2006 - Feb. 2007).
Reviews & Comments:If the crooner on A Place to Dream: Daniel A. Young sings Jazz Standards (Dreamwalker Media, $13.99) sounds familiar, that's on purpose--Young's voice sounds similar to songmen like Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, and Frank Sinatra (Selection-wise, his recorded jazz collection favors the latter; the CD is composed mostly of Sinatra songs). Or perhaps you simply know him from local stages--he's spent the last four years creating his jazz sound at D'Vine a Wine Bar and Brix in Zionsville. With a smooth, powerful voice, Young belts out classics like "I've Got the World On A String" and "The Way You Look Tonight," while accompanist Ken Fary riffs expertly away on the piano. -- Indianapolis Monthly, Sept. 2007
"We have a fine new singer on the recording scene, Daniel A. Young. In the broad and diversified world of male vocalists, there seems to be a shortage, especially around Indy, of male voices who appreciate the Great American Songbook, who can croon, can swing, with a sophisticated taste. But lo and behold, we have a new voice on the scene, and he is doing it the way it's supposed to be done...
"Congratulations on this wonderful CD. You've got that perfect pitch... I think you're going to make a lot of fans outside Indiana, on the basis of this CD. I really didn't hear a bad track on here. I can tell this is a labor of love; a lot of work went into it. This is meticulous; as we like to say, it's right in the pocket." -- Chuck Workman, WICR radio (interview)
"[Daniel] has a nice sense of rhythm and swing, influenced by Mark Murphy (hipster approach) and Sinatra (finger-poppin' style, classic repertoire). Attractive vibrato which he can turn on and off... a singer with talent who loves great music... The saxophone player, Michael Stricklin is a bona fide bitch! I kept waiting for him to solo again and again... Solid, locally-produced CD." -- Joe Vanderford, The Independent, Durham NC
"Daniel Young's new CD is a terrific musical offering deserving of a wide audience. The intimate music production and arrangements complement a collection of classic jazz vocal tunes to showcase his smooth and swingin' style. Mel, Frank and Tony would be proud." -- R. Sparks, Listener Comment
"A wonderful blend of jazz and great old tunes with an excellent singing voice... I loved it and will be back for more! - M. Weise, Listener Comment
